Patchwork - Community website

Overview

Patchwork is a community for creatives who want to stop building in isolation — photographers, designers, writers, filmmakers, musicians, and anyone else who makes things and would rather make them alongside other people. I designed and built the full marketing site: the place people land on before they decide to join.

The brief I set myself was to make an early community feel like somewhere you'd actually want to be — warm and alive, not empty and hopeful.

My Role

Designed and built, solo. Figma for the design, Framer for the build.

The design challenge

A community site sells belonging, and belonging is hard to show — especially early, before the numbers are big. You can't lead with "10,000 members" if you don't have them yet, and faking it is the fastest way to lose the exact people you're trying to attract.

So the whole site is built to make the feeling concrete instead of the metrics. It names the real problem first (creating alone gets heavy, motivation fades), then shows what being inside looks like — the range of creatives who belong here, mock conversations turning into real collaboration, work-in-progress being shared without pressure. The argument isn't "we're huge." It's "here's what it feels like, and there's room for you."

The Work

Here are some sections from the website.

Design notes

  • Opened on the ache before the pitch — "creating in isolation gets heavy" — so the site earns the invitation instead of just shouting it
  • Built the member-types section (photographers, designers, writers, filmmakers, musicians, and more) to do the heavy lifting a member count usually does: it shows breadth and lets a visitor find themselves on the page
  • Used mock conversations and in-progress chat snippets to dramatise collaboration actually happening, rather than describing it in the abstract
  • Structured "What we do here" as four plain promises — connect, collaborate, share early work, create together — so an emotional idea reads as something concrete you can do
  • Sequenced the whole page toward one repeated, low-pressure action: Join the community

This took a bit of work to put together, so if you liked it, I’d really appreciate you sharing it. If you have a similar project in mind, let’s work together.
